Anchor: In a significant step toward recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake, the town of Namie in Fukushima Prefecture has launched the construction of a large-scale solar power generation facility, with a groundbreaking ceremony held recently.
Narration: This solar power plant is designed to support regional revitalization and expand renewable energy adoption. Built on approximately 90 hectares of former farmland—located about 3 kilometers from JR Namie Station—the facility will feature around 200,000 solar panels. With an output capacity of 60 megawatts, it ranks among the largest such installations in the disaster-affected region, capable of supplying electricity equivalent to the needs of roughly 15,000 households. The total project investment exceeds ¥10 billion, funded by entities including Mitsubishi UFJ Lease & Finance. Scheduled to begin operation in 2020, the plant will primarily transmit power to Tokyo, with potential allocation for use during the Olympic Games also under consideration.
